Summer Band Series

The Centenary College Summer Band Concerts kick off Tuesday, June 14 for a series of three outdoor concerts at the Hargrove Memorial Amphitheatre. The Summer Band Concert series has been a staple since 1957 when B.P. Causey, then director of bands at the College established the series comprised of local professional musicians. For more than 30 years, the ensemble performed at the band shell, with audiences ranging from 500 to 3,000 concertgoers. The concerts was a summertime staple in Shreveport until 1987 when the tradition ended due to Mr. Causey’s advanced age and lack of funding.
The series was revived in 2000 when Mr. Causey’s son, Bill Jr., and Dr. Stone, produced and reestablished the Centenary Summer Band Concert Series with financial backing area businesses. According to Stone, a renewed series of concerts provided the public with the opportunity to hear concert music of high quality performed by top-flight musicians. With a “concert in the park atmosphere,” music has been selected from a variety of styles, including marches, Broadway show tunes, overtures, tone poems, and solo works with band accompaniment.

So, bring a lawn chair, blanket or sit in the bleacher seating at the "Shell" for this traditional summertime favorite!
Summer Band Series

Additional concerts will take place Tuesday, June 21 and Tuesday, June 28. All concerts begin at 8 p.m. The concerts are free and open to the community.
The first concert on June 14 will feature Dr. Tom Ticich on Accordion performing Tico Tico and Jalousie, both standards for the instrument. Dr. Ticich is a member of the Centenary faculty and is the Chair of the Chemistry Department.

The concerts continue Tuesday, June 21 when Centenary College trumpet instructor Mike Scarlato performs with his former student Clay Mills '11, on Antonio Vivaldi's Concerto for Two Trumpets. The concert will also feature works by the late American Composer Clifton Williams. Postwar Prelude and Caprice Americana are new publications from the pen of Williams, played here for the first time since the 1940s.

The composer's daughter, Michelle, will be in attendance. Williams, who died in 1976, left a great legacy of published works for band, but the family has only recently permitted publication of his early compositions.

The final concert will take place Tuesday, June 28 and feature Centenary College student Lindsey Fileccia singing "Just Leave Everything to Me" and "He Touched Me." Additionally, to celebrate the July 4th season, patriotic music honoring America and a narration of Aaron Copeland’s Lincoln Portrait by Centenary’s Director of Community and Intercultural Engagement, Chris Lavan will be featured. The narration showcases the speeches of the sixteenth president in a stirring musical tribute.
The Centenary College Summer Band Concert Series is sponsored by AEP Swepco, Ark-La-Tex Cardiology, Dr. & Mrs. John E. Stone, and an anonymous Foundation grant through Bankcorpsouth. The Summer Band series is conducted by Dr. Thomas Stone, professor of music at Centenary College. For more information, call 318.869.5238.

Centenary Receives Presidential Honor for Community Service

Today Centenary College of Louisiana announced its selection for the 2010 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. Centenary has received the honor for five years in a row since the program started in 2006.

The annual honor recognizes colleges for a demonstrated commitment to volunteering, service-learning, and civic engagement. The Honor Roll is an initiative of the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency that oversees national service and promotes volunteerism.

“This is a tremendous honor for Centenary to be named again to this list of colleges and universities who take pride in developing student leaders through service to their communities,” said Chris Lavan, Centenary’s Director of Community and Intercultural Engagement and alumnus of the school. “We continuously engage our students in a way that integrates living, learning, and action, and therefore helps them to learn more about themselves and their community through the act of “giving back.”

“Centenary students dive into community service with a passion that’s inspiring,” said Centenary’s Vice President for Student Development Betsy Eaves. “Whether helping prepare tax returns for local residents or cleaning up area neighborhoods, our students know what it means to serve the community – and in the process, they learn more about themselves.”

Each year Centenary faculty, students, alumni, and friends participate in the Big Event. The Big Event is a student-led, large scale, day of service which unites Centenary with its surrounding neighbors to build relationships, express gratitude, and enhance the community that has supported the college for over one-hundred years.

At the BIG Event, students, faculty, staff, and alumni all come together to act as neighbors helping neighbors. Together, we work to beautify the surrounding neighborhoods of Centenary College, to show our gratitude for their support of our community, and to allow us to give back and connect with the Shreveport community. Volunteers have the opportunity to choose from various helpful activities, including exterior home improvement, basic landscaping, and inside services.

Throughout the year the College and its Students participate in not only the Big Event but several community service projects such as renovations, mission trips, fundraiser events, community events, etc to support the surrounding community and the College's missions statement.

We hope that our service and dedication inspires you and prompts you to check out what we have to offer at Centenary and WHY we are who we are!

Diversity Week

Hey Everyone! It's me again :) So last week was Diversity Week and Hall Councils and other organizations around campus put on some pretty cool events. Out on the Caf Dec (a little gathering spot outside of our Cafeteria) there were Caribbean fruit creations, mini maracas, and even a pinata to break filled with delicious chocolate. My favorite event was the International Food Market. I almost forgot about it but I got out of class early and luckily went into the SUB (student union building) and happened upon some yummy free food from different cultures. Needless to say...it was a lot of fun to learn about the different foods and their origins...and hey, it was free food! and that never gets old :). Well, until next time, Adios Amigos!

Spring is upon us!

Hello Centenary!

So as some of you may know, the event of this weekend is called "First Choice Springboard." In previous years, this occasion was known as simply "Preview Weekend," but it has recently been changed to make the event even better. Starting on Friday, our campus will be chalk full of next year's incoming freshmen, who have already decided on Centenary as their college. This is a great opportunity for us as students to interact with you high school seniors, because next you they will be a part of our family!

Current Centenary Students: if you have not already sent in your information to be a host for the night, I really encourage you to do so. Not only will you be the face that they remember the most, but the fun times that you have with them will be one of their first memories of Centenary! So get involved in this weekend's event, because it can benefit you just as much as them!

Along with this weekend's events, we also have many things happening this week as well! With intramural softball games coming to a close, I really encourage you to get out to Jones Rice and see their final matches!  This week is the week that all of the teams that made it to the playoffs will be competing for the top spot. So get out there and cheer! Also, there is an extremely interesting program happening tomorrow in Kilpatrick Auditorium called "Invisible Illness." According to a study, 1 out of 4 people have an invisible illness, and this program has been created in order to raise awareness. There will also be free Raising Canes!

And lastly, with Easter approaching, it is becoming crunch time for all our classes again! So we are trying to get all our schoolwork done during the day so that we have time to enjoy our nights and above all...sleep! Once we get back from Easter, it is automatically Prep Week, so the end of the year is fast approaching! Which means we all need to get on top of our game, so that we can enjoy Easter break. And of course...enjoy how our GPA looks on the computer screen...

So enjoy spring and its beautiful weather, be active in campus events, and get good grades!

Intramurals

Hey everyone its Meg here updating you on what's going on around campus. Tonight is going to be an exciting night because it is the start of softball season for intramurals!

Intramurals are a great way to get involved on campus. Everyone is invited to participate in the fun just grab a group of friends, make a team name, and sign up. Intramurals start in the fall and go through spring. Each year the sports played are a little bit different; this year we had basketball, dodgeball, and the SUB Olympics. The SUB Olympics consisted of various activities that go on in the SUB like pool, darts, and ping pong. This spring they have already had soccer season, today marks the start of softball season, and in April we'll have beach volleyball season on Jones Rice Field. There is an overall competition for teams that compete in all of the sports. If a team finishes 1st, 2nd, or 3rd then they earn a certain number of points. At the end of the year the team with the most points is the overall intramurals winner.

Softball is the most well participated in and by far one of the most competitive intramural sport. Some of the teams are made up fraternities, sororities, sports team that are in their off season, people from choir, faculty, and there are teams of friends who just wanted to make a team. Games are every night Monday-Thursday for the month of March. For students participating I know intramurals is a great way to relieve stress after a long day of schoolwork, and for students not participating if they are ever in need of some entertainment then they can stop by Jones Rice to watch teams play. I like to go out and watch when the weathers nice. There are always people watching to talk to and socialize with. The games are only an hour so it is a great way to take a study break.

I know what I'll be doing on my study break tonight!

The Time is Almost Here!

Good evening Centenary Community, its Austin again, welcoming you to a late night adventure with myself and fellow students on campus!

Ladies and Gents the time is upon us! Next week we will finally be on Mardi Gras Break! There is only one downside to that....this image to the right is usually what this week reduces students to! Maybe you are a procrastinator, maybe mot. I myself am a self-proclaimed professional procrastinator!

The week before finals and the week before break are commonly referred to as "hell weeks" on campus, because this is the week professors assign papers and assignments that we usually push off till the last minute, and in one fell swoop they fall right into our laps with a due date on them that is fast approaching.

For example, last night I was working till 2am. on a Philosophy Paper, Women and Religion Paper, Apocalypse paper, not to mention the various readings for my 4 classes today, AND an analysis of an article!

yea...energy drinks save my life...so what?

There is hope on the other side of the mountain, though! Once this week is over we are all home free, able to enjoy time with our family and friends. For some of us, we will be heading down to New Orleans to celebrate Fat Tuesday in true Louisiana style, and for some of us we will be staying in Shreveport volunteering at various community organizations to help the citizens of our community that are less fortunate than ourselves.

Whatever it is you are planning I hope you all have a safe and wonderful break!

Escaped Images Dance Concert

Hey everyone! My name is Kay Simon and I am a sophomore student at Centenary from Baytown, TX. I am a Psychology and Speech-Pathology 3/2 program student and involved in many on-campus activities. In addition to being the president of Psychology Club I'm also involved in Centenary's Musical Theatre Group, a Greek sorority, and the Escaped Images Dance Company.

Our dance concert is this Friday and Saturday (Feb. 25 & 26) and we've been working really hard. Although the last few weeks have been tiring I've had a good time getting closer to the company and I cant wait to perform and put on a great show!

It also helped that our Spring Fling was last week. This year the theme was Super Heroes. Everyday there was a fun activity to go to and not to mention, awesome super hero cutouts around campus. No matter how busy you get there's always something fun to do on campus when you find a break :)

Scholar's Weekend

Hi my name is Austin Rinehart, and I am a Sophomore Religious Studies Major here at Centenary College. I am also a Student Ambassador, hence why I am writing a blog on the Admissions page! This week in the Admissions Office we are gearing up for Scholar's Weekend. What is Scholar's Weekend you might ask? Well, Scholar's Weekend is an opportunity for incoming freshman to compete for our competitive scholarships that we offer here at Centenary College. The big one everyone is aiming for is the Nancy Christian Scholarship which is a full tuition AND fees Scholarship offered to a few incoming freshman that the faculty, students, and staff have deemed necessary and acceptable to receive them.

Here at Centenary College roughly 96% of our students receive some kind of financial aid, and we strive to help each and every student reach their goal of attending the college of their choosing. We hope the choice students make is Centenary College, and we do our best to compile a scholarship packet that is geared towards their individual needs.

I would not be at Centenary College if it wasn't for the awesome Admissions and Financial Aid Staff. During my Senior year of high school I was researching colleges and visiting them almost every weekend. I made my decision based on what best fit me as a student. I narrowed my search down to four colleges. Two were in the State of Mississippi and two were in the State of Louisiana. Centenary College was the last of the four I planned on visiting. I came to Centenary as a high school student on a Friday afternoon, and left on Saturday as a future Centenary Gent! The memories I gained on that visit were unforgettable. I felt welcomed here, I felt loved here, I felt like I was a part of this school even before I was accepted.

During my time at Centenary I have made countless friends, and gained even more valuable experiences that have shaped me and made me into the person I am today! I extend to you an invitation to Centenary College. That is all it took for me, an invitation. If you are contemplating what college might be right for you, I urge you to consider Centenary College... it truly is a wonderful place!

Homecoming/Snowcoming 2011!

This year we celebrated Snowcoming 2011 at Centenary College! It was kind of unexpected, but very much appreciated! As we began our Homecoming week the forecast predicted 2-4 inches of the fluffy stuff! Indeed, as Thursday evening and early Friday morning began the snow started to fall. Classes were canceled and students enjoyed the first Snow Day for the Spring Semester.

This is an image of our Homecoming Court for 2011! We had an awesome time as Dr. Rowe, his wife Jodi, and last year's Queen Sunny LaGrone presented the court to the student body at halftime of the men's basketball game!

Hannah Henderson, Katie James, Justin Kennedy, and Brittany Richardson chow down on some yummy Pie Works before one of the Basketball games during Homecoming Week!

Senior Spectacular

Hey everyone! My name is Meg and I'm a student Ambassador at Centenary. I am also a member of the Centenary gymnastics team and we had quite the weekend this past weekend! This past Friday was supposed to be our final home meet of the season and Senior Night to honor our seniors. Unfortunately due to the weather all of the judges for the meet were unable to make it, and we were forced to cancel the meet. But since it was supposed to be a special night for the seniors the team decided to do an impromptu intrasquad meet called the Senior Spectacular. Instead of having real judges we invited some of our supporters on campus to judge. We had President Rowe, Athletic Director Dave Voskuil, Dr. Henderson, swim Coach Joe Ferguson, and mid way through the meet our Provost Mike Hemphill as our guest judges for the night. Dr. Rowe got really in to it and came out wearing a crazy maroon and white wig. It was hilarious!

Because of the weather we were unsure how many people would show up to the meet, but the stands were full of students, faculty, and people from the community. It was so amazing to see how many people from the Centenary community were willing to brave the icy weather conditions to support us. There was a handstand contest, cartwheel contest, and biggest fan contest for the crowd to participate in while we were warming up, and by the end of the night the entire crowd was on their feet clapping and cheering for the seniors' final floor routines. It was the best crowd we've had this year!

Even though it started out as a bad situation with a cancelled meet we were able to turn it around and with the support of our fans have a great night honoring our seniors!
